In a Potters Garden / Studio

Spring is here and with it comes a desire to be in the garden.
With a new patch of grass down I was struck
with inspiration to plant up the studio sculpture garden.

I have planted lots of grasses and some vines
which will be great raw materials for the basketry
that I often add to my pottery.

I also harvested some lamandra.

This week I have been working on
                                                          slightly larger lidded vessels.

this vase above slumped a little
but I thought I would see if I could
make a feature of it as I am feeling a
little slumped these days and I like it
when I capture a bit of how I am feeling
                                                    in my work.
Do you think it works in this piece?

                                                        This one above and below
I have made two alternative lids.
I find the hat can really change
                                                        the personality of a pot
                                                        Which one do you prefer?

Once again I am in a hurry and will
be cooking these fellas while they are still a bit wet.
We will see how it goes.

This post will be part of a shared potters blog Mud Colony.

'Lilli Pilli Studio'

My trip to New Zealand for the
Wearable Art Awards is getting ever so
close now and my attention has shifted
onto how I will present myself.
I am not one to fuss about my appearance these days.
In my youth I used to delight in being very
fussy about how I dressed but as I have got older
I prefer to put the effort and money into my work
                                                 rather than my appearance.

However, I do like interesting and unusual clothes
and jewellery and for an occasion like WOW
I will put a bit of an effort in to express a bit
of who I am, in how I dress.

In my mind I wanted to find a nice
fine woollen dress or shirt that I could dye in
eucalyptus and embroider to give a sense of the
landscape I live and work in.

We have some great clothes shops in the Blue Mountains
not cheap, but offering interesting designs in often
sustainable fabrics and at this time of the year it is
sometimes possible to find a bargain.
However finding something that will not look ridiculous on
my more mature, rounded form is often quite difficult
at least in combination with the sale prices.

But as luck would have it I found JUST what I was looking for.
A beautiful cream merino wool shirt in XXL,
marked down by half, and the only one in town!
                                              It was meant to be.

                                              I said "wrap it up!"
                                              She did.
                                              Then I did.

I cooked it and let it sit for a few days

on opening the bundle the colours where just what I was wanting

However I do find it disappointing when a garment
made of wonderful fabric isn't sewn together with
                                        the same kind of thread.

If these lines of stitch had been in a natural protein
based fabric they would have taken up the dye and
not be sticking out like sore thumbs.

                                                    Only one thing to do.

Dye some of Beautiful Silks glorious
silk thread to embroider into it.

So here is a bit of my work in progress.
My style of dress up sequin like.
                                                   More photos down the track.

And add some new heals to set it all off.

and I am nearly ready to go!

                                                      Meanwhile in the pottery studio

I am thinking of naming my studio
                                                                   ' Lilli Pilli Studio '

                                                      What do you think?
We have a lot of Lilli Pillis and
a large one overhangs the studio.

'Harry Kiln' has had a make over this week
with 6 new elements, a new thermocouple
                                                  and three new rods.
Not sure how it managed as much cooking
as it did up to this point considering how
                                                 much help it needed.

I have been making some little lidded jars
as practice for my big vinegar jars that I will
be working on next week.

I do love carving in clay!

                                                                      Busy busy busy

I will add this post to the Mud Colony -
a place to share clay stories from around the world.

Always in a Pickle,me.

My Tahitian lime tree is busy fruiting
and after a special request here is my
                                            favourite way of using them.
It is a family favourite in our house

Frustrations,Creations and Festivities

Frustrations,Creations and Festivities Make an Interesting Life

Life has been big as usual over the last fortnight.
We have had my eldest sons wedding in the preparation
and I wanted so much for the day to be perfect for them.

As the caterer for the 70 guests I had my work cut out.
I had decided to make some ceramics bowls and platters
to contain the large amounts of food.

So of course, as Murphy's Law would have it,
when it came to the final glaze firing my kiln decided
that it was in need of some help.

Fortunately I have some wonderful friends
and after almost giving up on having the pots
for the wedding our friend Kath, who is also
the art teacher at the school that my daughter
goes to, said she would be happy to help me
out with a firing in return for a firing I had done
for one of her HSC students a couple of years
ago when they had no kiln.

PHEW!

So the pots were fired,
the food was made
and the wedding was had.

.

Though it was just a little crrrrrrrazy in the kitchen!!!

                                                         It was a delightful ceremony

The cake had been hand painted by their friends
                                                                          Toni and Karena
                                                                           It was stunning!

Smiles of love filled the air

The littlies had a lovely time :)

A creative and happy wedding
and delightful memories were made.
all the wedding photos were taken by my brother Chris

But that is not all that has been happening....

My daughter has been sculpting in paper clay
a school project that she brought home
                                                                         to complete
                                                           I think she is BRILLIANT!

and our ground works have been continuing
and I now have a nice PIT..... for a firing!

                                                      HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!

and now that I can take a breath
I will have a look at what the Mud Colony
                                                            potters have been up to.
